Japanese towels are crafted with purpose and precision. Known for their soft texture, high absorbency, and minimal weight, they embody the Japanese philosophy of refined simplicity and functionality. With proper care, your towel will remain a trusted companion in your daily rituals for many years.
Why Cold Water?
In Japan, most washing machines are designed to operate using only cold water. This energy-saving practice has shaped how Japanese textiles are made: they are designed to perform well in cooler washing temperatures. As such, cold washing is both effective and gentle, helping preserve the towel’s fibres, shape, and softness.
At Kenkawai, we maintain this tradition while offering flexibility. Our towels can be safely washed at up to 40°C for everyday care, and up to 60°C when needed for hygiene, such as after illness or heavy use. However, to keep the fibres at their best, we recommend avoiding hot settings and sticking to cold or warm water for regular washing.
Lightweight Yet Highly Absorbent
Many people are surprised by how light and airy Japanese towels feel compared to their thick Western counterparts. But this is no compromise—quite the opposite. The exceptional absorbency of Japanese towels comes from a unique, loosely woven structure that allows water to be drawn in quickly and efficiently. Unlike densely packed terry towels, which rely on volume and thickness, Japanese towels achieve high performance with less bulk, making them faster to dry and easier to handle.
In Imabari, Japan’s renowned towel-producing region, each towel must pass a specific absorbency test: it must sink within five seconds when placed in water. To meet this standard, the weave is intentionally softer, more open, and breathable, which also contributes to the gentle feel on the skin—ideal even for sensitive users.
Washing Tips
1. Wash Before First Use
A gentle wash before the first use improves absorbency and removes production-related lint.
2. Use Mild Detergent (Less Than You Think)
Too much detergent can reduce softness and build up in the fibres. Use a small amount of a mild, fragrance-free detergent.
3. Avoid Fabric Softeners and Bleach
Softeners coat the fibres and reduce absorbency, while bleach can damage the weave and fade colours.
4. Wash With Similar Colours
Keep lights and darks separate to prevent colour bleeding.
5. Dry With Care
Line-drying is best. Japanese towels dry quickly due to their breathable weave. If you use a dryer for more softness, select a low heat setting.
6. Hang to Dry Between Uses
Always hang towels to air out fully. This helps prevent mildew and keeps them fresh.
7. Refresh Occasionally
Wash with a cup of white vinegar (no detergent) from time to time to remove any buildup and restore softness.
